Neem oil is a natural, plant-derived product. It is pressed from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), an evergreen native to India and now grown across South Asia and Africa. The seeds are crushed and the oil separated out. No solvents are needed, which is why cold-pressed neem oil is described as unrefined.
People asking whether neem oil is organic usually mean one of two things, so it is worth separating them.
1. Is it certified organic? That depends on the individual grower and batch rather than on neem oil as a substance. Oil pressed from organically grown neem seed is widely available, and the certification follows the seed and the pressing, so it is worth checking what a particular bottle says rather than assuming.

Neem oil is also biodegradable. It breaks down quickly in the open and does not persist.
